Throughout my practicum, I have always ensured that my planning, instruction, and assessment practices met the learning needs of the students. In my Field III experience, I planned and designed a grade 9 laboratory experiment that encouraged students to connect the activity to the learning outcomes outlined prior to the experiment. Designed for one class period, student collaboration was integrated into the experiment by requiring students to communicate and share their results with each other to have a complete dataset. A laboratory experiment was used because at Werklund, I cultivated a strong understanding of how students develop as learners, such that students in a science class learn better through a hands-on, inquiry-focussed approach. By understanding how students develop, I implemented an entry slip to provide accurate, constructive, and timely feedback on student learning. Without a strong knowledge of science, the facilitation of the experiment would not have been successful.
