In all the classrooms I have been a part of, I established inclusive learning environments, allowing students to be themselves. The moment I step into the classroom, my goal is to learn about the students to better support their growth, learning, and wellbeing. During Field III practicum, I used an introduction activity to reinforce that diversity is welcomed and embraced by allowing students to introduce themselves however they want, seen in the artifacts. Based on the knowledge I had of the students beforehand, I designed the introduction activity while being cognizant of students’ strengths, learning challenges and areas for growth such that they had the creative freedom to draw or write in words their introduction. Using the information I gathered from the students’ introductions, I began to incorporate students’ personal and cultural strengths into my lessons and activities.
