At Werklund, I was provided with the opportunity to expand my knowledge and understanding of the historical, social, economic, and political implications of the treaties, agreements, legislation, and residential schools of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit. I completed an Indigenous education course where I created and reflected on a presentation and fictional letter that would be sent home to students detailing the use of resources that would provide students with a better understanding and respect for the histories, cultures, languages, contributions, perspective, experiences and contemporary contexts of First Nations, Métis and Inuit. In the Indigenous education course, I also had the opportunity to talk with and consult with members of various Indigenous communities to further develop my foundational knowledge. Additionally, at my Field I practicum, I had the chance to use and observe a carousel activity using stories that reflect and demonstrate the strength and diversity of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit. Moving forward, I hope to further develop and expand my foundational knowledge so as to better incorporate First Nations, Métis and Inuit ways of knowing into my lessons.
